Civil rights leader to speak at Emory University

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - Emory University officials say civil rights activist and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient C.T. Vivian is scheduled to speak at the school's Robert W. Woodruff Library.

Officials say Vivian will speak about his life and experiences during the civil rights movement on Nov. 21, the day after being awarded with the nation's highest civilian honor in Washington.

Vivian joined in his first sit-in demonstrations in the 1940s in Peoria, Ill., long before the movement became front-page news. He later became a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

University officials say the event is free and open to the public.
