Atlanta City Council votes to change flag display

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Members of a Loganville American Legion Post made their case to the Atlanta City Council on Tuesday about an ongoing flag debate. They want the city to fix what they call an incorrect display of the American flag on International Boulevard.

The flag overlooking International Boulevard is painted vertically with the union in the upper right corner.

"The union should be uppermost and in the flag's own right, that is to the observer's left," said Chuck Bagley.

The American Legion Post 233 members said they've been trying to get the flag changed for almost two years now. They point to a specific restriction on the way the flag can be displayed due to the fact that it is a panel sign and not an actual two-sided flag.

"If there is anybody in this room that still thinks this is a flag and not a sign hanging over Freedom Parkway, I challenge you to allow me to go purchase a cloth flag and I will hang it properly," Bagley said.

Atlanta City Councilmembers voted to tentatively approach an action to change the sign.

The American Legion Post 233 members were given a standing ovation at the meeting.
