Panthers Drub Rams in Chippy, Intense Battle

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE - Steve Smith didn't mince words. Nor did he have any issue backing those words up.

The Carolina Panthers wide receiver tallied his 800th career reception on Sunday, during the Panthers 30-15 win over the St. Louis Rams. With the win, Carolina improves to 3-3 on the season.

Smith's 800th catch was a TD reception from Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. Smith beat Janoris Jenkins on the touchdown reception, getting the better of a terse battle that lasted the afternoon.

"He thinks he's Deion (Sanders)," Smith said after the game. "He's not."

Smith and Jenkins battled all afternoon, including several verbal jarring sessions.

"What I don't like is a young guy coming in, who obviously it's his first time ever using the internet, and google," Smith said. "And he googles information about me, talks about my wife, stuff like that. That's just kinda some of the b------- I don't play with."

Smith continued to rip into Jenkins, adding "if I see him on the street, I'm gonna bust him in his f------ mouth."

The war of words between Smith and Jenkins was only a microcosm of the chippy battle that took place on the field.  The teams engaged in brawls at multiple different junctures. Rams defensive lineman Chris Long was ejected for throwing a punch.

As for the actual game itself, the Panthers looked sharp defensively, holding the Rams to just fifteen points. Meanwhile, Cam Newton was once again efficient, completing 15 of 17 passes, including the touchdown strike to Smith.

The Panthers now have a short week, turning to Thursday night's match up with the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A win for Carolina would put the Panthers above .500 for the first time in the career of Cam Newton.
