2 Coatesville School Leaders Resign After Alleged Text Messages

Posted: Updated:
COATESVILLE, Pa. -

FOX 29 confirmed the Chester County District Attorney's Office has launched a criminal investigation involving reports of racially charged text messages between two high-level Coatesville school administrators on Sunday.

Both of them are resigning just days before school started. The controversy has a community very angry.

School Superintended Richard Como would not come out of his garage when we tried to ask him questions regarding his sudden resignation from his $175,000 a year job heading up the Coatesville Area School District.

Three weeks ago, there were two bombshell resignations that included Superintendent Richard Como and Athletic Director James Donato. Both mysteriously and suddenly stepped down, and few knew why.

In his resignation letter Como wrote, "The timing is right. Tonight we may know the reason."

"I was shocked. I was completely shocked," a parent said.

The Daily Local News reports it uncovered several pages of racially charged text messages sent between two men on district issued phones. In one case the "N-word" was used more than a dozen times in one conversation. Some of the texts mentioned students and faculty.

We're not releasing the actual text messages, but we showed the reported transcripts to parents who are shocked and disappointed.

"It's 2013. Who talks like that? I mean really. And on school phones no less," Talia Henson, a parent said.

Another parent Paige Carey said, "What kind of leader is this? You might as well be covered in white sheet and a hood."

Dontao and Como's resignation is on the agenda for Tuesday's school board meeting. Many parents plan to be there to speak their minds like Brooke Deboard.

"It's sad. It's really sad. This is who we have trying to help our teachers teach our children? I mean I would hope my children would never talk like that. These are from grown people that are supposed to be leaders in our community," Deboard said.

The school board president cannot comment because of criminal investigation.
