Missing mother's body identified thanks to DNA event

Evelyn Gunter Evelyn Gunter
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Evelyn Gunter first went missing earlier this year. Family says she got ready to go out and never returned. That was back on March 10 and from there the mystery behind her disappearance continued - until now.

Six months later, Gunter's family is finally able to have closure after her body has finally been identified.

A few days after Gunter's disappearance, her daughter, Jemia Gunter, says she got a strange text from her mother that said she was in Chicago helping a friend. Jemia didn't believe it because she didn't recall her mother having any friends that lived in Chicago.

Then a few days after that, Detroit Police located the mother's Chevy Impala at Club Celebrity but still no sign of Evelyn.

Months later, Evelyn's family attended an event held by Michigan State Police and the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office to provide DNA to aid authorities in identifying missing persons.

Their visit paid off, because soon after authorities were able to identify a body as that of Evelyn's.

The body was found just two days after Evelyn disappeared in a vacant garage not far from her house. Evelyn was shot three times, was wrapped in barbed wire, and burned so badly the body was unidentifiable until authorities received that DNA from her family.

Police do have a suspect for this now-murder case.

As for this grant funded program 10 people have already been identified but about 35 people in Michigan still have not been identified. Another DNA event is in the works.
