DETROIT (WJBK) -

Lafayette Coney Island in downtown Detroit was ranked the eleventh best hot dog in the entire country by The Daily Meal website.  They call the restaurant weathered, divey and eccentric.  I think those are compliments.

"You guys think this is the better dog than next door [at American Coney Island]?  They didn't even get ranked," I asked a customer.

"Absolutely.  There's no question," he said.  "Better snap.  Better dog.  Better chili."

Over at American, I said to Grace Keros, "They gave them [Lafayette] an eleventh ranking nationally and didn't even rank you guys?"

"Obviously they don't know better," she said.

It should be noted that a couple years back Lafayette copied American's snap dog, switching from Winter's Sausage to Dearborn Sausage as their supplier.  The Daily Meal doesn't mention this, choosing instead to focus on dining ambiance like that somehow affects the taste of a Coney.

"They called this place shiny and charmless," I said to Keros.

"It's shiny, clean and good food," she said.  "I'd hate to see their house."

She then asked me, "What do you think?"

"I like them both," I said.
