Breakthrough Cancer Treatment Unveiled At Penn

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A cancer-fighting breakthrough has come straight from the University of Pennsylvania hospital.

For decades, researchers have been working on T-Cell Therapy, which builds up healthy cells to mount an attack on cancer cells. They have been working without any dramatic proof that it worked, or that the immunity-boosted cells even survived, until now.

One Penn researcher has two adult patients who have been cancer-free for more than two years and their T-cells are still very evident in their blood.

Eight-year-old Emily Whitehead has undergone the treatment and now, doctors say, her cancer is in remission only three weeks after getting her first treatment. It has been 11 months since her T-cell infusion and Emily is back at home, living life like any other little girl.

Doctors say the difference between the adults and the 8-year-old is that Emily became critically ill after her first treatment, but then bounced back, good as new.
