Procedure May Turn Brown Eyes To Blue

Posted:

Is it a groundbreaking cosmetic procedure? Or a dangerous process that might ruin your eyes forever?

Joyce Evans looks into a claim that your brown eyes can be changed to baby blue, permanently.

Many people who don't have them want them and some have tried everything from contacts to implants to create blue eyes.

Now researchers say the answer has been there all the time -- right there - in front of your eyes.

All of these eyes were turned blue through the magic of our special effects -- they're not real

But what if you could make your brown eyes blue *for real?

A California company says a true-looking blue is lurking inside every eye.

Gregg Homer tells us Stroma Medical has come up with a way to uncover your own baby blues with a laser to blast the brown away.

"We started very conservatively which is a small spot on the upper iris behind the eyelid and we treated 17 patients in that way.. We started the energy gradually, raising it each time so probably in the last half of those patients, 8 or 9 patients, the spot that we treated turned blue."

"Seems extremely dangerous to me,” says Dr. Julia Haller.

Words of caution from doctors at wills eye institute are whatever the result, it is permanent.

"It's purposely traumatizing the eye with a laser, as best as I can tell from the available information, so that the cells actually rupture and release the pigment -- and you wonder where does it go and how safe is it to be blasting away at the front part of the eye, with such as delicate organ,” says Haller.

"We've had absolutely no negative side effects, no complaints of pain, or none of this pigmentary problem either,” says Homer.

Neither has Stroma Medical turned one pair of brown eyes completely blue - not yet anyway.

"You know, we're not gonna release this product if it's not 100% safe. One- we wouldn't do it anyway and two no regulatory body would allow it,” Homer says.

He says there are no pictures of any real eyes, in the research, he can show us -- only illustrations of what "can" be.

Still, Homer insists people are lining up for what may be a 5-thousand dollar procedure.

"We did a survey of hundreds of ophthalmologists throughout the us and 80% of them said they'd like to incorporate this into their practice."

Wills Eye surgeon Dr. George Spaeth was not surprised that we could not find one doctor in our area excited about the brown-eyes-to-blue laser.

But we did find some people thinking about it, even though there's no guarantee the color revealed would suit them.

Well, how about Homer's blue peepers??
